The Elections and Boundaries Offices at Lumberyard Crescent and the Sir Charles Bartlett Hyde Building are closed until further notice for sanitization purposes. According to the Chief Elections Officer, Josephine Tamai, a temporary assistant registration officer had passed away suddenly. The body of 59-year-old Carla Marie Bennett was found inside her home on Gwen Lizarraga Street in Belize City. Though Bennett had already retired as an officer, she regularly temps during transfer periods. Since her death was sudden, there are suspicions that it may have been Covid-19 related.  As such, the Ministry of Health will draw samples and have them processed while proceeding with contact tracing if the result is positive. Additionally, there is a scrutineer who has reportedly lost her sense of smell and taste and is self-isolating. Since the employees at the Elections and Boundaries offices make contact with members of the public on a daily basis, the closure is necessary to ensure that sanitization protocols are met.
