Electioneering or Necessary Repairs? Minister Musa Responds to Uptick in Road Works Before Municipal Elections

As municipal elections approach, many residents have observed an uptick in road works in their municipalities. In the Caribbean shores division, several streets have undergone repairs in recent weeks. Many have now questioned whether the phenomenon is electioneering, given the time. Yesterday, the constituency’s area representative, Minister Kareem Musa, responded to the allegation.

Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs: “We have been fixing roads but it’s never on the radar of the media. For example we fixed a road in Buttonwood Bay. Early last year we fixed and that was Manatee Drive, we fixed I think it is St.Luke Street again in Caribbean Shore and there were other road works that started over six months ago you know ? It’s just that the funding for the road works because they had been dug up on those streets on Dunn, Landivar, Guadalupe and I’ve been advocating heavily for these streets to be repaired since six months ago for us to get the funding for that and so it’s not electioneering. These are roads that have already been in the pipeline for quite some time now and it just so happens that they’re being finalized now.”

Meanwhile, the Belize City Council has announced that there will be a closure of Mosul Street from January 22 through to February 26.  Victoria Street will also be closed during the same period, from its junction with Barrack Road to the New Road intersection.  The Marine Parade Boulevard will also be closed up until April 2; this is from its intersection with Cork Street to the intersection with South Park Street.
