Some people would say that the United Democratic Party is currently in turmoil with no clear direction for its future. The Minister of State in the National Security would beg to disagree, however. Elodio Aragon told us today that he believes that this is a normal transitioning phase that any mass party goes through.
Elodio Aragon Jr. Minister of State, Ministry of National Security: “I don’t see it as bumpy. You know I’m telling you that there is a transition phase that must be taken place and in any political party of course you have people who aspire to be leaders in this great United Democratic Party and I feel proud to know that the United Democratic Party is looking and having discussions to select the best leader for this country and for the party. It is unlike the other political parties who have no such undertaking and therefore you know I want to tell the public out there, the nation at large, that the United Democratic Party is going through a transition because we are having the kind of discussions that are open, that are genuine because at the end of the day we want to see the right person in that position that can take this United Democratic Party to win the next election but more importantly to serve the greater good of Belize and Belizeans. Every leader is entitled to their opinion, this is the great thing about the United Democratic Party we are open enough that leaders can speak and say what they feel, what they think and this is all about the transition in terms of finding a new leader for the UDP. This has to be done and I would prefer that we do what is right now so that when we are ready to move on with the new leader that we are set and I prefer that than for us to select somebody and down the road we are having a lot of issues. Everybody knows that I support Patrick Faber, I have done so in the past, I continue to do so today because truly I believe that he is the person that can take this party to victory in this upcoming elections.”
Aragon also stated that no matter who is chosen as leader, he believes the UDP will unite behind that person and that they will be successful in winning and fourth term.
