Employers Reminded of Voting Rights Compliance Ahead of Bi-Election

In light of the bi-election, all employers and the general public are reminded of the requirements under the Representation of the People Act. The legislation mandates that employers must allow their employees reasonable time to vote in the elections next week. Employers must permit employees to take a reasonable amount of time to vote without any deduction in pay or other penalties. Any employer who refuses to grant this time or interferes with the voting process through intimidation or undue influence will face penalties. These penalties can include fines up to $2,000 or imprisonment for up to one year. Employers are urged to comply with these provisions to ensure all employees can exercise their right to vote without fear of repercussions.
