Epifania Caliz Charged with Common Assault for Coughing Incident
Eleven days after assaulting court reporter, Anita Nembhard, Epifania Caliz was charged with common assault. The 35-year-old resident of Belmopan was caught on camera, removing her mask and coughing in the face of the reporter on Monday, October 16. The incident occurred in front of the magistrates’ court as Caliz exited the building. According to Nembhard, she was given the runaround by the Police, but today, Police Constable John Valerio levied the charge against Caliz. Caliz has since issued an apology to Nembhard, via her attorney, Dickie Bradley, but the reporter has insisted on pressing charges. The incident occurred at a time when the government had proposed to increase the penalties of assault cases against reporters, public prosecutors, and other groups of professionals.
