Escapee Hilderbrant Codd Remains at Large: Commissioner of Police Issues Warning

It has been twenty-four days since Hilderbrant Codd escaped police custody, and despite police having an idea of where he might be hiding, tonight he remains at large. Codd, along with Jessie Mejia slipped through a jury room at the High Court of Belize on December 5. Commissioner of Police Chester Williams says that he hopes Codd will do the right thing and turn himself in and gave a stern warning to anyone helping him that they may face consequences for doing so.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “I am still hopeful that the young man will surrender himself to the police or that his family members are going to encourage him to surrender to the police. We do get information that he is somewhere in the Belmopan area and may be facilitated by some people. I want to sound it clear that harboring a fugitive is an offense and it is punishable with imprisonment. If we were to find Hildebandt Codd in the company of anybody or if we were to have evidence that anybody were facilitating him during the time that he escaped we will ensure that we prosecute that person to the full extent of the law. So again just to sound a warning if the family members know where he is I’m asking them to please ask him to surrender himself to the police and we go from there.”

In his absence, Codd was found guilty of the 2018 murder of Desmore Bowman, who was tortured, decapitated, and buried in a shallow grave. The High Court has set Codd’s sentencing hearing for January 11, 2024. There is a thousand-dollar reward being offered for information leading to Codd’s capture. Meanwhile, the officers who were assigned to guard Codd and Mejia are now facing disciplinary action by the police department.
