Ambassador of European Union’s (EU) has commended the Government of Belize (GOB) for “putting Belize on the map”. The commendation came during an event yesterday, attended by Ambassador Marianne Van Steen, Delegation of the European Union to Jamaica, Belize, the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos Islands and the Cayman Islands. Her visit was in relation to the signing of the Green Growth. Trade, Border Management Programme agreement.

Marianne Van Steen, Ambassador European Union: “I was congratulating the Prime Minister and actually also the former Minister of Foreign Affairs we’ve been working very closely together as to how this government has been able to put Belize on the map. We have had visits from the Prime Minister to Brussels twice and from the Minister of Foreign Affairs twice which is pretty unique I must say and I’m going to be honest I mean not everyone knows in the world where Belize is. It’s a tiny little beautiful country but it helps when people go and talk to each other and it’s not just virtual or with letters or you know our presence here is here but it’s not the same thing that you have a prime minister actually going to the European Union and to reach out to other leaders so that has helped a lot. And that’s what I meant when I said this government – it’s of course not only the government it’s a lot about you know exchanges between people as well and working with civil society but I really think that Belize has been very outward looking the last couple of years and I congratulate the country for that.”
