Everald Martinez Found Not Guilty in Toddler Murder Case

Everald Martinez was found not guilty today in the court of Justice Sandcroft.  Martinez was at the center of the tragic death of 17-month-old, Alyssa Nunez back in 2018.  He stood accused of raping and bludgeoning the toddler to death in Maskall Village, Belize District.  Five years later, and Martinez walked out of the courtroom a free man, just after three o’clock this afternoon.  Justice Ricardo O’Neil Sandcroft issued a 60-page judgment, saying that he was not satisfied, beyond a reasonable doubt, that Martinez committed the offense.  He added that while he is convinced that a murder did take place, there was only circumstantial evidence.  It was also noted that the autopsy evidence provided by Dr Mario Estradabran conflicted with the evidence given by Dr Cecilio Eck, the pediatrician who first attended to Baby Alyssa.  Additionally, the judge stated that while the baby was left in Martinez’ care there were others who the baby was left with prior to being rushed to the hospital.  Upon examination, lacerations and injuries were noted in the baby’s vaginal and anal area.  The baby survived five days before succumbing to the injuries.  Our court reporter, Anita Nembhard was at the court when Martinez walked out, but he refused to give an on-camera comment.  Martinez’ trial began on March 22 this year and concluded last month with a verdict delivered today.  During the trial, Martinez did take the stand and said at no time did he bring harm to the baby as he loved her as his own child.  Martinez was represented by Attorney Oscar Selgado.
