Exhibit Keeper in Cannabis Candy Scandal Faces New Charges

In April 2023, police exhibit keeper, thirty-eight-year-old Mario Bustillos made headlines after he improperly disposed of cannabis-infused candies that wound up in the hands of schoolchildren. Fourteen children consumed the candies and several were hospitalized causing a panic among parents, health authorities and the public.  Investigations led to the arrest of Bustillos who was charged with ten counts of negligent harm. Apparently, those charges were withdrawn in October last year.  Today, he appeared in court for a new charge of willful oppression. Bustillos went to court with his attorney, Nazira Myles Espat. No plea was taken as the matter will be handled on indictment at the Belize High Court. His case was adjourned to May 3, when he will return for a preliminary inquiry. With the prosecution delivering Bustillos’ disclosure on compact discs, a dtermination had to be made on whether the accused was able to access the files.  Attorney Espat registered concerns that the new format for disclosure is delaying the preliminary inquiry and that the matter has been in the court for a year. Bustillo remains on interdiction while the matter is before the courts.
