Expansion of Southern Sea Port Will Not Affect Current Ship Docking Ports

The Government of Belize has approved a formal review of the current agreement with Belize Island Holdings Limited. The idea is to not only secure the future of cruise tourism in the south but to expand Harvest Caye owned by the Norwegian Cruise Line. Today, Minister Anthony Mahler explained that this will not hinder other ships from their current docking ports.

Anthony Mahler, Minister of Tourism and Diaspora Relations: “We have had one brief discussion or two brief discussions with Norwegian to see what is the growth path for the island. There was a carrying capacity done for the island that says of the island can accommodate for a given year somewhere around a million maybe 1.5 million people and so we are – saying with consultation with the industry – but how do we grow that? How do we increase that but not for any other ships to go down so it’s an island for Norwegian and so it’s primarily for Norwegian  cruise lines to go down there but my discussion with them initially,  just one or two meetings, is for us to if you are going to come to Belize why not look at having multiple visits right in Belize so you come to Harvest Caye and then come to Belize city.”
