Exploitation of Parrot Fish Causes Negative Effects to Coral Colonies

Now, parrot fish are protected under the new fisheries regulations act of Belize. This discovery also incurs a fine of more than one hundred thousand dollars. The Technical Assistant for the Marine Program at the Wildlife Conservation Society, Henry Brown Jr., highlights the environmental impact of exploiting the specie.

Parrotfish play a critical ecological role within coral reefs; by eating large amounts of algae, they keep its growth in check, making sure that it does not overgrow the reef. Algae can smother corals, stunt their growth, and reduce their recruitment success.
