For the past couple days, Love News has been reporting on the circumstances that led to a video of a 15-year-old girl who was beaten and detained by police officers. The video went viral on Wednesday, and since then, we have learnt that she was a resident of San Pedro and that she had previously escaped police custody while officers were transporting her from the Belize Magistrate Court to the Princess Royal Youth Hostel. The video sparked outraged over social media as son people sided with the officers while others felt as if excessive force was used. Today, Deputy Prime Minister Patrick Faber appealed to the public to not jump to conclusions before hearing the full story.
Hon. Patrick Faber, Deputy Prime Minister of Belize: “All that I can hope for is that these situations teach us that there are situations that may arise that we need better training in terms of handling, when we find a troubled young person like that who evidently is very difficult to deal with what is the protocol, how do we handle it those kinds of things I wish that this experience can teach us and again I appeal to those on the social media, of course that is probably a very futile appeal, to not jump to conclusions and not to make a bad situation worse. By tearing down the police and pointing fingers and calling names in fact police have enough on their hands, the police already have enough situations where there are genuine cases of abuse I think but I’m not certain that this is one of them given the merits or demerits of the case that I’ve heard.”
Love News will keep providing updates on this story.
