Patrick Faber was sworn in as the UDP’s 6th leader last night via a virtual handing over ceremony. The 42-year-politician has spent the last few years expressing his aspiration for leadership, and last night Faber arrived at this milestone in his political career. The 3-hour event saw a mix of local entertainment and the introduction of the party’s 31 standard bearers. It also saw multiple tributes and past interviews including one with Faber when he was vying for party leader. In this interview Faber spoke about his plans as a leader.
Patrick Faber, Leader, United Democratic Party: “It’s all about the base and as long as I am in the driving seat I try my best never to forget that it is about the people. It is about what is best for the people and so for me if I should be the new leader of course that holds as one of my foundational positions and that translates or extends even further if I am to be the leader of the country because we’ve got to get back to the basics, we’ve got to get back to the base, we’ve got to listen to what the people want and we have to do the things sometimes very unpopular things that are best for the people, we have to find the right marriage of those circumstances so that this country can develop and those to me seem to be suitable watch words for the era that I would lead.”
Prime Minister Dean Barrow and the outgoing leader for the UDP got a tribute of his own documenting his accomplishments in the past 12 years. His LIVE presentation was brief, lasting just under five minutes. It was during this address that Barrow passed on the Party Leader seat to Patrick Faber.
Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow: “What a tremendous privilege it has been to serve my party as leader over these last twenty plus years. I thank all those with whom I worked and I especially thank the rank and file, the soldiers of our party, the devoted women and men throughout the length and breath of this country who sacrifice every livelong day for our party, who do all for our party, who would give their very lives for our party. Theirs is the glory and I declare that experiencing their hard work, being a part of their solidarity, their fervent passionate love for the UDP has been the most uplifting feature of my political life. In turn even as I leave I pledge my continued support for the UDP. As long as there is breath in my body my commitment to the UDP is unswerving and in retirement I will continue in any small way that I can to be at the service of this great United Democratic Party. Ladies and gentlemen, Belizeans all with highest confidence, with surest conviction I now cede the mantle of the United Democratic Party leadership to the Honorable Patrick Faber. The Lion of Collet. The greatest Minister of Education this country has ever seen and the new political champion of all the people of Belize. It is a matter of the greatest pride that the UDP will be led by such a man, young but wise and mature well beyond his age, bloodied in politics and a fighter for the UDP from his teenage years already proven to possess limitless energy. Gifted with an unconquerable will to win and blessed by God and his early apprenticeship in the church with genuine empathy for all people and a special love for the masses, the marginalized, the dispossessed. He is a veritable Daniel come to judgment and with him the welfare of the UDP and Belize is in the best of hands. I sincerely congratulate him, wish him a long leadership tenure and thank him for the assurance, comfort and faith that his demonstrated qualities and phenomenal capacity bring to all of us in this great United Democratic Party. Long live Patrick Faber. Long live the UDP and Long Live Belize.”
Among the 31 standard bearers was the successor for Dean Barrow in the Queen Square Division, Denise Sista B Barrow. Sista B has been in the political arena specifically in the Queen’s Square Division for over two decades as support for her brother, Dean. Now, she too has ascended to standard bearer status.
Dorian Pakeman, Government Press Officer: “Now this next introduction will not be breaking news because we know what the outcome will be in our beloved Queen Square. Our candidate is of few words but her actions on the ground are as impactful as the actions of her brother our current Right Honorable Prime Minister. She knows to work with the people and her political system is among the best of the best. She only uses pencil and paper and she comes within ten to twenty votes of the election count every time. I introduce to you Denise “Sistah B” Barrow.”
Patrick Faber is now the 6th Party Leader for the UDP. His predecessors are Dean Barrow, Manuel Esquivel, Curl Thompson, Ted Aranda and Dean Lindo.
