Family of Detained Suspect in Belize City Shooting Disputes Police Allegations

While police say Jones played a role in the murder, his family says otherwise. Last night following his detention at the Raccoon Street Police Station, his family members took to social media and began making serious allegations against the police. They say he is innocent and did not have any part in the deadly shooting. Here again is Reporter Vejea Alvarez.

Vejea Alvarez, Love News: Police say 18-year-old Jaylon Jones shot and killed 25-year-old Charles James and opened fire on them during a shootout. However, his mother believes the teen is being wrongfully accused and claims he’s a victim. The Peter Seco Street resident and another man were allegedly spotted by an off-duty cop while fleeing the scene. The teen reportedly opened fire on the cop, before encountering another officer who returned fire and injured him in the process. Commissioner of Police Chester Williams says he then collapsed and was found hiding in nearby bushes.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “From all indications he was dressed in the same clothing that one of the two alleged gunmen were dressed in and police also followed the blood trail from where the officers had fired shots at the gunmen and the blood trail led to where he was found. So we’re sure he was one of those persons who is involved in the murder and was also one of those who shot at the police.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love News: The minor’s mother, Shirelee Barrow, claims Jones did not play any part in the shooting. She says he was fleeing from the scene when police arrived and shot him.

Shirelee Barrow, Mother: “I heard somebody coming in the yard so I popped my back blinds. When I popped my back blinds I heard the person running going there and when I looked I saw it was my son. I was hollering for him “Jaylon. Jaylon. Jaylon.” but he didn’t look back. I think he had on the same clothes that he had on from the whole day because he was telling me he needs to wash, that he didn’t have any clean clothes, a white shirt and black pants that is what he had on. Continued running but I didn’t take it like that so I went inside.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love News: Barrow claims that when she arrived at the yard her son collapsed police were intentionally keeping him from seeking medical attention and pepper sprayed her after she refused to leave his side.

Shirelee Barrow, Mother: “So I was fighting through them, refereeing through them like hustling and bustling between me and my daughter to fight through them to get to him and after that I was hollering for him and that’s how he heard me and he said “Ma ! They shot me Ma !” After that I said “Please help my son, please take him to the hospital.” “I will take him right now.” that is what he said. After that I said please help me and all of them just stood there watching me so I ended up getting away from them and I popped around them and after that I went and I went to hold my son in my hands and asked him who hurt him and he said “Ma when that happened I don’t know what happened everybody started running.” and he said “I got shot I don’t know who shot me.” that is what he was telling me, that he doesn’t know who shot him. So when that happened the police came and fought him from me and they picked him up and put him in the back of the truck.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love News: While Barrow believes her son was being denied assistance, ComPol Williams explained that the woman was quick to defend her son and crucify the police without knowing all the details of the incident.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “As you would know there is a standing protocol that we do not transport injured persons to the hospital, the police only transport the dead. Injured persons are to be transported by the ambulance and so the police officers had taken the young man to the Mahogany station awaiting the ambulance to arrive so that the ambulance could have transported him to the hospital. For me I personally would not want for the police to have escorted him for the main fact that he is the same one who had shot at the police and secondly it was the same police officers that he had shot at who had him in custody so to avoid any speculations I would have preferred the ambulance to take him.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love News: Williams further stated that Jones’ injuries were not life-threatening. He also explained that due to the circumstances, police were required to detain Jones and keep residents from the scene from getting close to him.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “When you have a person who is accused of killing another in the same area you wouldn’t want to have any and everybody to approach the vehicle that he would be in because what if it would have been associates of the person that he had killed who would have wanted then to come and just killed him the police vehicle ? So police had to make sure that the accused was safe while in their care at that particular moment.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love News: Police believe James and Jones knew each other, but the teen’s mother says that even though the men live nearby, they did not know each other. Vejea Alvarez, Love News.
