Family Petitions for Justice: Accused Robber’s Death Raises Questions

The family of 49-year-old Ronald, the accused robber who was shot and killed, has launched a petition in hopes of exonerating him. Last week, Gibson passed away while recovering from gunshot injuries at the hospital. The Belmopan resident was shot by Gilda Abadi, who claimed Gibson was attempting to rob her and her daughter near Independence Park. Abadi told police that Gibson was about to attack and rob her when she pulled out her license firearm and opened fire after he refused to back away. However, Gibson’s family isn’t buying her side of the story and says their brother was not a crook. His sister, Shawn Gardiner, spoke to the media today and stated that while her brother has passed, she believes it is important for her brother’s name to be cleared.

Shawn Gardiner, Sister of Ronald Gibson: “I’m gonna get like at least three hundred signatures or more if I can just to state the type of person he was you know ? Because he was a hard working guy. He sold pastries for those who know him, he cut yard. He was working at Santander so I don’t see how they call that robbery that he did the other day. I mean how can you rob someone if you’re a distance from them, probably drunk because he told me he was drinking something in a cup and I know it was rum because he is always drinking. Maybe he was serving I don’t know at the time and then they found it like he wanted to rob them but they maybe just felt threatened you know and just shot him like no sense. At least they could have did a warning shot in the air or shot his feet. Nobody that robs is just gonna have you loading a gun and then wait for you to get shot. That’s nonsense.”

Reporter: So what are you guys hoping to accomplish with this petition ?

Shawn Gardiner, Sister of Ronald Gibson: “Well what we are hoping to accomplish we just want you know, like the media can see that the type of person he is and so that we can get some type of justice with this.”

Gardiner added that apart from not being able to get much information from the police, the family has yet to receive Gibson’s body.

Shawn Gardiner, Sister of Ronald Gibson: “We’ve been hearing it’s the police, it’s in the police’s hands and they’re the ones investigating and it will take a while for us to get the body. Well the family needs to bury their loved one we can’t wait anymore, this has been going on too long. It’s almost three weeks now you know so we need to bury our loved one. We all have to go on with our lives you know ? We want to bury our loved one. We don’t want to have him in the hospital forever you know ? So we want the police to speed up the process or whoever is in charge, the doctor, whoever. It’s questions more than answers. I want to get down to details about my brother as to who shot him that night because this lady is wrong. Everybody is saying she is wrong from her first story she gave. I don’t have proof but I’ve been hearing several things going around and the police they don’t even want to take us to canvas the scene or nothing, the family.”

Gibson was shot in the abdomen and died days after he was admitted to the hospital.
