Family Seeks Justice After Assault: Son Detained, Daughter Expelled from School

A mother from Cotton Tree Village in the Cayo district, says she’s being denied justice on all sides after her daughters were assaulted and police detained her son for trying to defend them. Martha Alfaro says that on Monday, one of her daughters, who is a minor was surrounded and beaten by some of her schoolmates. When her adult daughter, Benita Jones arrived, she too was assaulted. Upon hearing of the situation, one of her sons took a machete and went to the house of the family that allegedly committed the assault. Two of his brothers went after him to bring him home. However, they were met by a police officer who reportedly took the machete and opened fire on the brothers. Alfaro says that one of her sons has since been detained for shooting at the officer, while her younger daughter was expelled from school, despite being the one who was beaten.

Alfaro says that the family that assaulted her daughters have been bullies in the community for years. Up to tonight, the son has not been formally charged.
