A family in the Cayo District is demanding justice for their loved one, who died three months after being injured in a road traffic incident in June. Three months ago, 24-year-old Kaver Smith and his two cousins were injured in an early morning accident on Buena Vista Street, San Ignacio. Around 3 o’clock, the men were walking on the street when they were hit from behind a vehicle. Smith sustained severe injuries and spent forty days at the KHMH fighting for his life. He was released in July, but on Sunday morning, he was re-admitted due to complications. Unfortunately, Smith lost the battle and died shortly after being admitted. Love News spoke to his mother, Carla Smith, who says that his family is extremely disappointed with the police’s investigation.
Voice of Mother: “He put up a fight. He did all he could. He fight till the end, till the last breath this morning. He fought till the end. My only disappointment is with the police department because after that accident and when I listened to the news and I heard the police, the statement that was given by the police as it pertains to the incident. I was really disappointed because who in their right mind, three guys will jump in front of a vehicle ?After the incident my nephew took a tour on the scene. Everything was on the scene. They didn’t even do a crime scene. The only time the police came to me is after my son was released from the hospital. He spent forty days in the hospital and after he was released from the hospital, the same day the police officer came because my sister pushed the issue. If she didn’t push the issue they would have taken it, like, just that someone just or a dog or something got knocked down and I am really disappointed. I am really disappointed at what we all went through, the expenses that we incurred during his time and the lack of, I don’t know, I am… I am lost for words. I cannot say the lack of… I am unable to say it. But it really hurts me. It really hurts me as a mother because my son was only 24 years old and I have only two children. He’s the oldest and I have a daughter. And it hurts me, breaks my heart that my son died.”
Smith added that her son sustained severe brain damage and never managed to regain full consciousness. Police had detained the driver of the vehicle, Wayne Henry, who claimed that he saw the men but wasn’t able to avoid hitting them. Henry was served a notice of intended prosecution, but the police are yet to charge him. Smith’s death has sparked outrage on social media, especially among his family and friends demanding justice.
