A lit cigarette: that’s what fire officials say led to the fire that claimed the life of 49-year-old, Omar Barahona. Yesterday, Barahona was found burnt to death after a blaze at his home in Corozal Town was extinguished. The fire broke out just after three a.m. and ravaged the ten-by-fifteen zinc and wooden structure. Barahona’s family says he was socializing the night before and believes his smoking habit led to his demise. Today, Belize City Station Supervisor Kenneth Mortis confirmed the family’s belief and shared some advice for persons who smoke while they imbibe.

Kenneth Mortis, Belize City Station Supervisor, National Fire Service: “Mr.Barahona’s death was literally what we would consider a freak accident. The very rare occurrence that anything could happen actually did happen and it’s an unfortunate event and definitely a tragic loss to the family. While the family is grieving over Mr. Barahona’s death this serves as a constant reminder to the general populace as well the importance of the do’s and don’ts when you’re having a little social time, having some alcohol and if you’re a smoker that we have unfortunately gathered enough information to support the cause that Mr.Barahona in his reportedly intoxicated state fell asleep while having a cigarette and the cigarette reportedly fell on his bed or on part of his person and clothing caused a fire over time and eventually that small flame turned into a much bigger flame which consumed himself and the structure he was in. Again it’s really one of those freak accidents that you never really think could happen.”

Barahona resided at the home for over two decades.
