Fatal Motorcycle Collision Claims Two Lives in Orange Walk
Over the weekend, a father of two and his brother-in-law lost their lives in a road traffic accident near mile 65 on the Philip Goldson Highway. On Saturday morning, around 9 o’clock, Alex Calderon and Ruperto Carlos Novelo were on a motorcycle heading to Orange Walk Town when they collided with a pickup truck near the Mamayel Curve in the Orange Walk District. Mejias, a resident of Trial Farm Village, and Novelo, a resident of San Roman Village, both died on the scene. Assistant Commissioner of Police, Hilberto Romero, explained that police are yet to establish who was at fault but have served the driver of the pickup truck with a notice of intended prosecution.
ACP Hilberto Romero, Officer Commanding Eastern Division: “Information is that the pickup was heading to Corozal when it collided with the motorcycle. Both persons were taken to the Northern Regional Hospital where they were pronounced dead on arrival. Investigations into this matter continue. The driver has been served with an NIP and samples obtained for testing. Yes we are recording statements, doing interviews and at the end of that investigation we will determine who is at fault and if whoever is found responsible we’ll levy charges.”
Novelo leaves behind a two-year-old child and his common-law wife, who is six months pregnant.
