A man from the Cayo District lost his life on Friday night in a road traffic incident in Belmopan City. Around 11 o’clock, 30-year-old Esvin Damian was traveling in a pickup truck when he lost control of the vehicle after jumping a bump near the Hummingbird Highway roundabout. The vehicle crashed into a concrete structure after flipping multiple times and was extensively damaged. Damian, a resident of San Ignacio Town, was rushed to the Western Regional Hospital but died on the way. Cayo Correspondent Fem Cruz spoke to a witness of the incident who explained that the driver was speeding.

Reporter: Tell us what you saw a couple of minutes ago here at the roundabout in Belmopan. I think this is the hummingbird roundabout.

Witness: “Yeah I just saw the man speeding, the guy on the pickup that flipped. He was speeding and he just couldn’t stop at the bump and he flew past the roundabout as well and flip. So yeah.”

Reporter: Where he was traveling from?

Witness: “He was traveling like from Belmopan coming towards this roundabout Hummingbird.”

Reporter: And the vehicle flipped several times?

Witness: “Yeah. Well, he just jumped this and then when he knocked one of those poles he just flipped. The vehicle just turned over.”

Reporter: Okay, after that you ran to the area. Tell us what you saw after that.

Witness: “Yeah, well, I got off the vehicle and then came and see I just see the man laying there on the vehicle still.”

Reporter: One person?

Witness: “Yeah, only one person on the vehicle.”

Reporter: And his condition?

Witness: “He wasn’t moving. He was just there in the vehicle. He wasn’t moving. So I don’t know.”

Reporter: You know the person, sir?

Witness: “No, I don’t know.”

Reporter: So after that, the police came and the ambulance?

Witness: “Yeah, the police came. Didn’t took long. They didn’t take too long to come in. So yeah, they came like five minutes after the accident.”

Reporter: The person was trapped inside the vehicle?

Witness: “Yeah, he was there inside the vehicle. He wasn’t moving.”

Reporter: So apparently he was in a critical condition.

Witness: “Yeah, he was in a critical condition.”
