A father of four of Ladyville Village lost his life on Sunday while on a family trip in Gales Point Village, Belize District. Around 3: 30 pm, while canoeing in the village’s lagoon, 46-year-old Benigno Betancourt jumped into the water to test its depth and did not resurface. His family members and a group of villagers then immediately made several attempts to locate him, but their efforts were to no avail. It was until thirty minutes later that Betancourt’s body was found by two of his sisters that were a part of the search group. He was then transported to the Southern Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead after several attempts were made to resuscitate him. His brother, David Betancourt, spoke to our newsroom about the tragic incident.
Betancourt added that his brother died while on a routine outing with his family and says that his death has echoed the importance of spending time with loved ones.
Police are now awaiting the result of a post-mortem examination to determine what led to Betancourt’s death.
