Father of One Killed While Going to a Funeral

Meanwhile, police have formally arrested and charged the alleged trigger man in Saturday afternoon’s broad daylight murder of twenty-five-year-old Jeovanni Augustine. The father of one was gunned down in Belize City as he waited to attend a funeral with his in-laws. Reporter Vejea Alvarez has the story.

The sounds of gunshots broke the silence of a quiet Saturday afternoon as one Belize City family was preparing to attend a funeral. The gunshots allegedly fired by 27 year old Kareem Beeks were aimed at 25 year old Jeovanni Augustine who was waiting for his common law wife on Curasow Street to attend a relative’s funeral. Around one o’clock Beeks reportedly arrived in a heavily tinted white car, exited and unleashed a hail of bullets at Augustine leaving him dead on the pavement. According to an eyewitness the incident occurred in the blink of an eye.

Eyewitness: “When the bus came this side here I stood up there and he was standing up there with another young man an he hailed me and I got there the vehicle came out and pushed out the shots on the man. We were helping him to get up from off the ground the same time the police reached here.”

The motive behind the callous murder is currently unknown but according to the public relations for the police, ACP Fitzroy Yearwood, Augustine was indeed the intended target.

ASP. Fitzroy Yearwood, Public Relations, Belize Police Department:Like I said he was attending a funeral and there were several persons there but obviously from the movement of the accused we can only say that he was the intended target.”

Investigators have also impounded the car used in the crime and recovered the alleged 9mm Glock used to execute Augustine. However according to ACP Yearwood investigators are unable to release the names of the persons those crucial pieces of evidence belong to.

ASP. Fitzroy Yearwood, Public Relations, Belize Police Department: “I am not in the practice of giving out what would be evidence especially in capital crime so whatever we have gathered as evidence remains with the investigators and the prosecutor’s office until that matter goes in front of the court.”

Augustine leaves behind his common law wife and their infant child.
