Tonight, police are seeking a teenager for the Monday night slaying of a construction worker in Belize City. The incident occurred in the Jane Usher Boulevard area around six o’clock and claimed the life of a father of three. Reporter Vejea Alvarez visited the scene and filed the following report in the City’s latest homicide.
Vejea Alvarez, Love News: Just before six o’clock on Monday evening 40-year-old Sean Palacio Sr. had just arrived at this home on Mud Street after making his daily runs to the community pipe. As the father of three neared his gate he was ambushed by a gunman who fired a single gunshot that caught Palacio in his head. He tried to run for help but unfortunately he collapsed a few feet away in a nearby drain. And according to witnesses he laid there for several minutes before he was transported to the KHMH where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His neighbor and friend for the past thirteen years Melissa Martinez says she was shocked because they were just socializing on Sunday evening.
Melissa Martinez, Neighbor: “Halloween we were enjoying ourselves and thing for Halloween. Everyone was having a great time Sunday so I was just wasted yesterday from Sunday’s hangover and in the evening I got up and did my laundry. I heard a loud noise like a cherry bomb and then next thing I heard bawling outside. When I reached outside it was people, the police, everything had already happened.”
Vejea Alvarez, Love News: Palacio’s sister Hadie Garcia was still in a state of shock when we spoke to her this morning. She says that she is still wondering why anyone would have wanted to kill her only brother who was a devoted father to his three kids.
Hadie Garcia, Sister: “It’s very heartbreaking. I couldn’t believe the news like I’m telling my niece that anytime now he will walk through the door because it’s still shocking that he’s no more and the question we’re all asking is “what ?”. Because he’s a nice person, he’s a helpful person, he’s a hard working person and he’s a person that cared for his kids he was dedicated to his kids he’d go the extra mile just to make his kids have something so I don’t understand why.”
Vejea Alvarez, Love News: Garcia described her brother as a loving person who was always open to lending a helping hand.
Hadie Garcia, Sister: “He was a loving person, a kind person, a helpful person. I tell you once you ask him to do something he will do it for you and he liked to watch Westerns so he would come here and watch Westerns and sometimes we would run and joke about the Westerns and sometimes I would tell him brother I don’t feel like watching Westerns but I’d still let him do it because I know he loved to watch Westerns and we would talk about it. Most of the time me and him are here so we’d spend time laughing and talking about the movies because he loved to watch movies that was his thing.”
Vejea Alvarez, Love News: I understand that his kids live here as well ?
Hadie Garcia, Sister: “Two of his kids live her with us yes.”
Vejea Alvarez, Love News: How have they been taking his loss ?
Hadie Garcia, Sister: “Hard. Everybody is taking it hard, we’re still taking it hard. We still feel like we’re in a dream that this is not real but it’s real.”
Vejea Alvarez, Love News: Martinez says she too is bewildered as to why Palacio was executed because he seemed to have gotten along with everyone in the neighborhood and was always willing to assist.
Melissa Martinez, Neighbor: “He was a nice person. Anyone asked him for anything they get it. I mean he’s a nice rasta man that I even ask him why don’t you go be a minister because whenever somebody needs something you always have it to give them. They could need pipe, they could need cement, they could need steel ,they could need board, they could need whatever he’s right there for them. Money ? Whenever someone would be broke and wanted to borrow money he would lend you without have to pressure when he will get back his money.”
Vejea Alvarez, Love News: But despite the pain and anger felt by Palacio’s family his sister says they will leave things in the hands of the lord.
Hadie Garcia, Sister: “All I need to tell them is we need to stop and God will deal with everything. I have no hate or anything bad to say about anyone because this world is round, what happened to you today could happen to somebody. All I have to tell them is it’s time to stop killing each other. Why are we hurting each other ? We need to make love prevail in our heart. Time is too short you know and leave everything in God’s hand that’s all I could say. God will take care of everything.”
Vejea Alvarez, Love News: Investigators have recovered a single expended shell from the scene. Their investigations continue.
