Manzanero also says that poaching practices in Belize’s Chiquibul and Maya Mountains are not only limited to scarlet macaws. He highlighted that the Friends for Conservation Development has been observing Guatemalans who seek to exploit Belize’s resources, most commonly xate (sha-te) or timber such as mahogany and cedar.
Manzanero stated, however, that the frequency of illegal poaching has significantly declined due to the FCD’s work with monitoring the human footprint within the forest reserves. He says that the FCD has partnered with several other organizations to undergo studies to further promote the recovery of Belize’s forests.
