FCD Releases Scarlet Macaws into Chiquibul Reserve for Conservation

The Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD) continues to work toward preserving and protecting Belize’s Scarlet Macaws. On Saturday, the organization released five young macaws into the Chiquibul wildlife reserve. The parrots were rescued by FCD rangers and nursed back to health with the assistance of the Belize Wildlife Referral Clinic. Belize has less than four hundred birds in the wild, which are at constant risk of being pouched. The FCD’s Biodiversity Research and Inventory Technician Wilmer Guerra explained the importance of protecting the macaws’ population, particularly during their nesting season.

The Chiquibul Forest is the key foraging and breeding habitat for the species in Belize, as a result FCD has systematically been documenting and conducting biological monitoring of the species for more than ten years.
