Hundreds of acres of the Baldy Beacon area in the Mountain Pine Ridge was ravaged by a wildfire three weeks ago. The damage inflicted occurred primarily in private lands, sparing the forest reserve. The Forest Department and the Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD) managed to contain the blaze. The FCD recommended a full investigation into the situation as it appeared that negligence was the leading factor to the loss of vegetation. Executive Director Rafael Manzanero provided an update.
Rafael Manzanero, Executive Director, FCD: “We have felt that it was really one that could have been prevented. We did inform the Government of Belize, really, to do an investigation into that because I know that the particular units would be able to find out more about what really transpired there. It is important to note that the fire did not really go into the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve. It really occurred on the private lands, you know, just across the road from the Pine Ridge and over 11,000 acres was actually burnt in that area.”
