Forty-two year old Lincoln Moguel, a former taxi driver who got into a police pick-up and reversed it, was fined $1,000 today by the Chief Magistrate, Ann Marie Smith after she found him guilty of taking a conveyance without lawful authority. Moguel was given until December 31 to pay. If he defaults on payment he will serve 6 months. The incident occurred around 11:05am on April 27, 2014. Police Constable Janel Myers testified that while she was at Racoon Street police Station she saw Moguel get into the police vehicle and reversed it. She said she managed to stop him before he could drive the vehicle out the compound. Moguel gave a statement from the dock in which he denied he committed the offence. He said that he was set up and that he was not given a charge sheet and he was not given disclosure. Before the trial Moguel, who seems to have a mental problem, was evaluated by a psychiatrist, who wrote that he was fit to stand trial. Chief Magistrate Smith advised Moguel to go to the clinic and get some medication.
