Fire Department Investigating Fire that claimed the lives of two children up north

The Fire Department says it has commenced an investigation into Tuesday night’s explosion in Neuland Community, Corozal District that claimed the lives of an infant and a toddler. Kenneth Mortis, Station Supervisor at the National Fire Service, spoke on the matter today and explained that the investigation is in its early stages.

Mortis added that upon the conclusion of their investigation, the findings will be handed over to the police. Preliminary information, however, indicate that the daughter may have been using gasoline instead of kerosene.  The incident happened at around seven thirty when 38-year-old, Justina Sawatzky was using a lighter to illuminate outside her concrete bungalow, and her daughter was refilling a kerosene lamp.  An explosion ensued, and injured the entire family, including her children: 15-year-old daughter, Helena; 13-year-old, Jacob; 3-year-old, Ana who died as well as the 10-month-old infant, who also died in the explosion.
