Over the weekend, a fire broke out at Northern Fishermen Co-operative located on North Front Street in Belize City. As a result of the quick response by the National Fire Service, the fire was brought under control. This morning, Benisford Matura, Assistant fire Chief, briefed the media on the fire.
Benisford Matura – Assistant Fire Chief: Both our units was dispatched, one form the North side and form the south side. Upon arrival we discovered the first floor, the North Eastern section had thick black smoke emulsing from the roof area. We got into operation, we did a forcible entry and got into operation and eventually extinguished the fire. Upon completion of this extinguishment, we recognize that this area, actually the entire upper floor was the storage area for the cope where they store empty boxes that they used to export their product. Our investigators are still trying to determine what caused the fire. We are presently leaning towards to thinking it was some sort of an incendiary fire but the investigation is still on.
Matura said the total amount of damages has yet to be determined.
