What began as a terrifying midday emergency ended with relief and gratitude after firefighters were able to contain a blaze that threatened to destroy an entire family’s home. At approximately 12:50 p.m., a fire broke out in one bedroom apartment of a duplex. The two rooms sit atop the interim outlet for the Joseph and Tayler Steel Depot at Mile 2.5 on the Philip Goldson Highway. Flames and smoke quickly filled the room as firefighters responded quickly and managed to put out the fire before it could spread to the rest of the apartment. The occupants of the apartment declined to give an official statement, still shaken by the incident. A family friend, however, described the experience as frightening and emotionally overwhelming, noting how quickly a normal afternoon turned into a moment of fear and uncertainty.
The family estimates between four and five thousand dollars in losses and damages. Despite the financial setback, they expressed deep gratitude that no lives were lost and no injuries were sustained. Preliminary information indicates that an electrical outlet was the cause of the fire.
