Two fires occurred over the Labour Day weekend in Belize City on Saturday night. One of the fires destroyed a man’s home, while the other destroyed the contents inside a storage container. Station Supervisor at the National Fire Service Kenneth Mortis spoke to us today on how the firefighters had to deal with the two fires that happened simultaneously.
Kenneth Mortis, Station Supervisor: “As per normal we responded with two trucks and we indeed found a structural fire that we tried to extinguish and bring under control. We learned that the owner of that establishment Mr.Dion Sutherland was not at home at the time of the fire however investigations are ongoing as to the cause and the origin of that said fire. Mr.Dion’s property was a four bedroom, one bathroom wooden structure a bit elevated off the ground with zinc roofing. From there or actually I should say simultaneously while fighting that fire we had a secondary call for a fire in progress on the Central American Boulevard across from the boulevard plaza. It took some moments before we could have strategically relocated from point A to point B as we were already committed to fire fighting in one structure. The beauty about that fire was that the fire was contained to a double decker 20 foot containers that was used by the proprietor of One Plus One Supermarket for their warehouse and storage purposes. We got into firefighting mode and extinguished that fire and we learnt that the upper of the two containers where the fire originated from was used primarily for dry goods storage while the lower container was used for liquid storage. We have concluded that that fire was as a result of an electrical flaw that started by one of the meters. However based on wear and tear purposes or for a lack of a better word that was the contributing cause in terms of the origin of this fire.”
We also spoke with the owner of the home that burnt down, Deon Ferguson, who stated that he was not at home at the time of the fire.
Dion Ferguson, Fire Victim: “If you noticed my house got burned. I hear from the neighbors they heard like a bang like someone broke into the house and started the fire, it looked like they robbed not really sure yet I haven’t heard anything from the firemen as yet. Everything was destroyed it was a full furnished house as well I lost everything. I hardly come here like I said I live in San Pedro and I work over there and so like when I do visit to come and check my house in a month or two months. If you notice it’s like an open yard and if you notice I was building my fence. I don’t think I have problems with anyone. It’s a lot of valuables gone so I don’t really have the right estimate but I’d save over a hundred thousand going for two.”
Ferguson stated that if anyone from the public would like to assist him, he can be contacted at 614-3466.
