While the Belize Police Department is reporting progress in their strategies, there is the flip side to that where some police officers are being accused of abusing their powers. It is the first allegation of police brutality for this year and it is against the Gang Suppression Unit (GSU). Love News understands that the GSU raided a house on Caeser Ridge Road just after eleven o’clock yesterday morning. 22-year-old Giovanni Lambey was at home with his uncle and mother when the GSU came looking for a “Lambey”. According to the officers they were searching for ammunition. In the process, however, the victim’s family told the media that they physically assaulted Lambey at the back of the house as neighbors watched. Lambey is currently at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital receiving treatment. According to his uncle, a bedridden diabetic, Windell Carcamo, he was unable to see what the officers were doing but he could hear his nephew’s cry for help.
Speaking on the issue this afternoon was the U.D.P standard-bearer for Port Loyola, Philip Willoughby. Willoughby told Love News that the citizens and the Police should maintain common ground in order to work in unison.
Giovanni Lambey is the cousin of Alrick Carcamo who was gunned down on November 7 by a masked man on Raccoon Street Extension.
