Friday saw the very first Special Sitting of the House of Representatives with John Briceno as Prime Minister. The People’s United Party had a landslide victory in the November elections and its 25 Parliamentarians took their seats on the government’s side. Love News, in an interview with Prime Minister Briceno, asked him to relay his sentiment on this milestone in his political career. While it may be a private celebration for him, Briceno told the media that he has not even had time to savor the victory.
Reporter: I know you spent years in opposition, today’s your official sitting in that chair as Prime Minister and you keep hearing now in the media the Briceno administration, has it sunken in as yet for you ?
Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister of Belize: No actually. From I got in I’ve just been working. I’ve been working every single day including on Sundays. When I was locked up in my room I was working from 8:30 until midnight. In two weeks I saw one movie because I was just working all day. You don’t even have time to be able to savor the moment because we are in a crisis both economic and the crisis of the pandemic and we have to find a way how we’re going to deal with that. It’s not about relishing the moment that you are Prime Minister. As I was joking with my family I said this is the first Christmas in my entire life that I did not have a chance to enjoy it. It is an awesome responsibility that the Belizean people have placed on my shoulders at the most difficult time in its history and it will require all of my experience as a business person and also as a legislator to be able to maneuver all of these challenges that we have in front of us and be able to try as best as possible to reach out to the opposition to work on this thing together.”
