Fisheries Department to enforce regulation that prohibits the placement of fishing gear near the reef

The Fisheries Department is setting to enforce the regulation that prohibits the placement of fishing gear near the reef. The regulation is in accordance with statutory Instrument No. 106 of 2022, which prohibits the placement of fishing gear within 300 yards of the Barrier Reef or any Patch Reef. Fishing gear also includes any type of straps and shades. The Fisheries Department advises the public that effective November 16, 2023, they will proceed with the removal of gears found in contravention of the regulation. The Fisheries Department makes an appeal to Fishers to uphold the regulations and urges all citizens to report any violators to the department.
