Fishermen Caught With Conch Outside Season

Damien Nah, one of five fishermen charged with possession of conch during closed season, was fined a total of one thousand four hundred and forty dollars today by Magistrate Deborah Rogers after he pled guilty to the charge. He was fined five hundred dollars plus twenty dollars for each conch. He was given by October 9 to pay the fines. If he defaults on payment he will serve six months. The charge was withdrawn from the others who included Ronald Escobar, Julian Cob, Fonciano Coco Sr. and Fonciano Coco Jr. and taxi driver Carlos Turcios. Around 4:20 p.m. yesterday, five fisheries officers went to a police check point, located at the corner of Phillip Goldson Highway and Vista Del Mar where the six defendants were handed over to them. The defendants had 47 conchs in their possession. Nah who claimed responsibility for the conchs said that he was taking them for his wife who is pregnant. Turcios picked up the fishermen at Northern fishermen cooperative and he was taking them to Orange Walk.
