Five police officers expected to be charged with manslaughter for the death of Derrick Uh

Tonight the Belize Police Department is preparing to criminally charge five of their own for the tragic death of 20-year-old Derrick Uh. The Cristo Rey Village resident was found dead inside the police prison van on Sunday afternoon after being locked up inside the van for almost fourteen hours. Today, he was laid to rest in an emotional sendoff. News of his death brought widespread public condemnation on the Police Department with thousands calling for justice to be served. Last night, Home Affairs Minister Kareem Musa explained that six police officers were being questioned. Tonight we can confirm that five police officers are expected to be charged with manslaughter by negligence. One of those police officers is Errol Peralta. Peralta hired the services of Attorney Norman Rodriguez who spoke to Love News.

Our newsroom asked Rodriguez if his client believes he is being roped in with the other officers and is being used as a scapegoat given the fact that he is denying any wrongdoings in Uh’s death.

Today, Uh, who died as a result of a heatstroke due to prolonged confinement in an enclosed space, was laid to rest by his family in Cristo Rey village, Corozal where a host of his relatives and friends gathered to say their last goodbye to the twenty-year-old.
