Flood Alert: Heavy Rainfall Expected in Multiple Belize Areas

Today, authorities cautioned residents countrywide to be alert for possible flooding as weather conditions support several inches of rainfall in the next few days. In its latest flood forecast issues this afternoon, the National Hydrological Service warned that a tropical disturbance is expected to bring heavy rainfall and raise river levels. Areas that are expected to see heightened river levels include the Sibun River at Freetown Sibun, the Southern Lagoon at Gales Point Village, the watersheds on the eastern slopes of the Maya Mountains, the Sittee River near the Kendal Bridge, along with the Swasey and Bladen Branches of the Monkey River. Meanwhile, waters are expected to reach near flood levels on the Deep River at Medina Bank, the Rio Grande at San Pedro Columbia, and Big Falls South, the Moho River at Blue Creek South and Jordan, and on the Temash River at Crique Sarco. The National Meteorological Service of Belize explained that Tropical Depression 21 formed in the Caribbean Sea yesterday around 3:00 p.m. and moved into Nicaragua overnight. Chief Met Officer Ronald Gordon explained that the system dissipated by this morning.

The Belize City Council issued a notice yesterday for city residents in flood-prone areas to be alert and review their preparedness plans so they can respond quickly in the event of flooding
