Flood Warnings Remain for Central and Northern Belize Amid Rising River Levels

The National Hydrological Service says that flood warnings remain in place for portions of central and northern Belize. The Hydrology Office says that flood warnings are in place for areas along the Rio Hondo, Macal, Mopan, and Belize Rivers in the Orange Walk district, as well as the Moho, and Temash Rivers in the Cayo district. Severe flood warnings are also in place for the Rio Hondo at Blue Creek North and Douglas villages and for the Sibun River at Freetown Sibun. Waters in the areas marked for severe flooding are reaching historic levels last seen during Hurricane Mitch in 1998. Flood conditions have caused the closure of the low-lying bridge in San Ignacio and have left the access road to San Roman and San Antonio Villages impassable to small vehicles. The Hydrology Office is cautioning motorists to be extra careful when traveling through areas with active flood warnings. As we reported yesterday, the Hydrology office expects flood conditions to be prolonged due to rains forecast for the rest of the week into this weekend. Water levels are within normal ranges in areas along Monkey, River, Deep River, and the Rio Grande River.
