As we reported yesterday, the unprecedented flooding in Belize City has raised concerns about the upcoming High School Uniform Parade scheduled for this weekend. The parade route traditionally takes students up North Front Street which, since Monday, has seen serious flooding even in the absence of rain. We asked Prime Minister John Briceno about whether any considerations are being made to change the parade route, but he says that’s not his call. The Prime Minister did say that the flooding is being driven by climate change and that a long-term plan will need to be developed to address the issue.

John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “No you’d have to talk to the mayor I have nothing to do with that or to the people from NICH but again this is the issue of climate change. I mean climate change is upon us and unfortunately it will not get any better it is going to get worse so we have to think about a long term plan.”
The National Celebrations Commission told Love News that the flooding issue is expected to be clear by the weekend and that currently, no plans are in place to change the parade route.
