Former AG talks corruption in Barrow Cabinet

Senator Michael Peyrefitte was a leading member of former PM Dean Barrow’s Cabinet from 2017 up until the UDP left office in November 2020. Today, we asked the former AG and Police Minister about comments his former boss made about corruption in the government. The former PM spoke to Love News for more than an hour last week, candidly discussing a raft of issues. In his discourse on corruption, Barrow admitted that he knew there was ministerial corruption but was unable to do anything about it because he did not have enough legal evidence. Peyrefitte believes that the former PM did all he could given the circumstances. Here’s how he explained it.

Throughout the almost thirteen years the UDP was in office, the former Prime Minister fired Elvin Penner in October 2013. His former deputy, Gaspar Vega resigned from Cabinet in 2016. Former Minister Marcel Cardona had undertook what the UDP said at time was a “constructive resignation” in March 2011, while both Ministers of State Edmond Castro and Mark King were suspended in November 2010 and February 2013 respectively. Castro would later reemerge as a full substantive Minister, while King, Penner and Vega did not seek re-election under the UDP.
