Admiral John Borland handed over command of the Belize Coast Guard to Captain Elton Bennett yesterday during an official ceremony and celebration of the BCG’s 14th anniversary. Borland will be moving on as the Chief of Defence Staff in the Ministry of National Security. During yesterday’s presentation, Minister John Saldivar spoke on the importance of such a post and how it will benefit the country’s national security.
Hon. John Saldivar, Minister of National Security: The change of command of course is very significant. It symbolizes our democracy, a democracy which sometimes we take for granted. Admiral Borland was not yet due for retirement but we opted for this change in command because we felt that it was an opportune time for us to have new leadership of the Belize Coast Guard but also a new direction at the Ministry of National Security. Today we have two separate entities that together and jointly are responsible for the defense of Belize in the case of any external attack or threat. We therefore saw it necessary for the creation of what in other countries is known as the Chief of Defense Staff that is responsible for coordinating the agencies that are responsible for the defense of our country. It is within that context then that we have agreed to establish that office and it’s first CDS to be our outgoing Admiral John Borland.”
An official ceremony is being planned for Borland as he prepares to take his new post.
