Former Belmopan Mayor Sheran Palacio Breaks Her Silence

Sixteen days after coming under scrutiny for land distribution under the Innovabel Estate Development, former Mayor Sheran Palacio has issued a public statement. According to the one-term mayor, the current Pablo Cawich administration is merely trying to erase the legacy she has left at the Belmopan City Council. She added that the color of her skin did not help the situation as there were undercurrents that sought to diminish her mayoral position since she was a black woman. Her statement makes no apology for what she terms as helping ordinary Belizeans obtain land. As a matter of fact, Palacio alluded that there were several other ill-gotten lands by wealthy persons which she says would never be exposed. She added that she has not made any financial gains in the land distribution in Innovabel Estate. She defended her position by saying that there were workers at the council who never owned a piece of land, and that under her mayorship she distributed land regardless of race, gender or political persuasion. The statement was released today but was dated September 30.
