Several months after being terminated by the Belize High School, career educator Jamie Usher says she’s been vindicated. In February, Usher’s fourteen-year stint as the BHSprincipal ended after the school’s board of directorsmoved to oust her. The school had claimed the decision was based on complaints made by staff members over mistreatment. However, Usher was never formally notified of any complaint against her and was not allowed to present a defence. She alleged that her termination was without cause and violated the school’s grievance procedure and her natural justice rights. And, through the attorney Senior Counsel Dean Barrow, Usher took the matter to court, claiming damages, interest, and costs because the decision was morally reprehensible and legally unsupportable. The matter was to commence in court tomorrow, however, the case came to an end today through an out-of-court settlement. Today, Usher received a letter informing her that the school did not want to proceed to court. Usher stated “I received a letter from the Managing Authority of Belize Elementary School and Belize High School…… I feel vindicated by this outcome. I express my gratitude to all those who have supported me throughout this process. Your thoughts, prayers, and well wishes have been deeply appreciated. I continue my service as an educator, contributing to the growth and development of our community.” Additionally, Usher had initially stated that the proposed payoff from the school was unsatisfactory.
