Former Minister Godfrey Smith appointed to serve on Guyana Presidential Commission

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tourism and Attorney General Godfrey Smith was this morning appointed to serve on a Guyana Presidential Commission. Former Minister Smith is one of a three-member team, probing Guyana’s General and Regional Elections of 2020. Those hotly contested elections were embroiled in a long five months of legal battles from the Guyana High Court to the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ). The country’s major political parties, the People’s Progressive Party/Civic and a merger of the Alliance for Change and A Partnership for National Unity, accused each other of electoral fraud. The country’s Chief Protocol Officer in the Ministry of the Presidency, Colonel Francis Abraham outlined the president’s reasoning. Thereafter, former Minister Smith took the oath.

The commissioners’ terms of reference are expected to be released soon by the Guyanese Government.
