A former store manager of Belize Comex Paint was fined in court today after being convicted of stealing from her boss. Thirty-year-old Maritza Isabel Padilla appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where she was charged with two counts of theft. The charges stem from allegations that in November and December of last year, 2024, Padilla on two separate occasions stole sums of money totaling $4,421.63 and $537.80. She pleaded guilty to the charges and told the court that she had intended to replace the money before the company conducted its inventory. However, the inventory took place before she could return the funds, leading to the discovery of the discrepancies. Padilla further explained that after the inventory, she was confronted about the missing money and asked to repay it. According to Padilla, she was unable to do so at the time and subsequently ceased working for the company. Despite the two separate instances of theft, Magistrate Black noted that they arose from a single set of facts and circumstances. As a first-time offender, Padilla was spared a custodial sentence. Instead, she was fined $1,000 plus a $5.00 cost of court, with a deadline of June 30, 2025, to pay. Failure to do so will result in a six-month prison sentence. An investigation revealed that on December 5, 2024, goods valued at $4,421.63 were delivered to General Mart in Belmopan, Cayo District. The delivery driver collected the payment and tendered it to Padilla on December 6, 2024, but this money was never deposited into the company’s account. A further discrepancy was found for goods provided to Lalos Welding Services in Belize City on November 25, 2024, amounting to $537.80. This payment was made via an online deposit directly into Padilla’s personal Belize Bank savings account.
