Former Prime Minister Dean Barrow has been cleared in the Supreme Court by Acting Chief Justice Michelle Arana. The matter surrounds the one point three billion dollars that Barrow had spent in government without first seeking approval from the National Assembly. It is a case that was initially heard by former Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin in which he had declared the spending as illegal back in 2020. The ruling, however, was never finalized prior to Justice Benjamin leaving office, and by extension, the country. With the spending already been declared as unlawful, Prime Minister John Briceno and Minister Julius Espat sought a finalization of the case through Chief Justice Arana. That did not happen, however, as Chief Justice Arana ruled that she cannot give life to a ruling that she has deemed as ambiguous and possibly non-existent. Based on several other factors, the matter was dismissed, putting Barrow in the clear from Benjamin’s declaration of unlawful spending.
