Former Ports Commissioner to become the new Ombudsman

Major H. Gilbert Swaso has been tapped to be the country’s next Ombudsman. Major Swaso, who previously served as the Mayor of Dangriga Town, was most recently the Ports Commissioner until his tenure officially ended on Tuesday, December 6. Love News has been reliably informed that Swaso has accepted the Government of Belize’s offer in principle and the first steps to getting Major Swaso into his new role will be when the House of Representatives meet on Monday. After that, it is expected to go to the Senate with final assent by the Governor General. Swaso will likely take up his new responsibilities early in the New Year. Major Swaso replaces Lionel Arzu who demitted office in April last year. Swaso served in the Belize Defence Force for almost 25 years.
