Former Prime Minister Dean Barrow has coined the current happenings in Belize are multiple attacks on the opposition and its supporters. Barrow issued the audio message as the United Democratic Party held its convention over this weekend. We’ll tell of that convention in a few, but first, we bring you the former UDP leader’s perspective on how the country is being governed under the John Briceno administration.
Dean Barrow, Former Prime Minister of Belize: “This convention comes at a time when it is no exaggeration to say that our country is at a crossroads. The constitutional opposition is under attack, democracy is under attack, and our people are being relentlessly assaulted by the current administration. It is the truth. It is a matter of fact that this current administration has gone completely rogue. Their corruption so early on is staggering. Their contempt for due process and the rule of law is frightening. And they are utterly unfeeling, utterly uncaring about the welfare of the people of this country. The cost of living is unbearable and the masses are simply finding it impossible to make ends meet. All the while, those in Belmopan are heedlessly fattening themselves from the public purse. They’re flying all over the world. They’re borrowing as though there is no tomorrow and there is nothing to show for it in terms of the improvement of the lot of the people of this country.”
Barrow furthered his statement by appealing to the UDP leaders and supporters to recognize the common ground and to make genuine efforts at uniting as a party.
Dean Barrow, Former Prime Minister of Belize: “Therefore implore you to unite, to come together and to fight like hell for our party, for our democracy and for our country. Please summon up the spirit, the tradition of the United Democratic Party and ensure that you will move forward together to bring victory once more to the UDP and to the people of Belize. I know that the UDP is equal to the task. I congratulate you again and I exhort you. Move forward ceaselessly, unrelentingly, don’t stop until you free this country and return it to the people, the rightful owners of our Belize.”
