The Association for Concerned Belizeans (ACB) was a group that aided in the bringing down of the PUP Government back in 2005. At the time it was made up of outspoken Belizeans including Jeremy Spooner, David Vasquez, Lois Young Barrow and Karim Bergers, to name a few. A few weeks ago we noted a Facebook Page claiming to be a part of the ACB’s reactivation. Since then the posts have been heavy with allegations of corruption against elected officials as well as lewd and personal attacks to members of the UDP. Love News had sent the ACB an inbox message inviting them to reveal themselves and talk to us about their mandate. They saw our messages but have yet to respond. We continued looking for answers and got to meet up with former President and founder of the ACB, Karim Berges. He told Love News that since he has resigned, he has no idea who has taken over the organization. Additionally, he believes that the ACB is headed in a different direction than what it was originally intended for.
Karim Berges, Former President and Founder, Association of Concerned Belizeans: “I resigned from the ACB about early 2007 if I recollect correctly.”
Reporter: After you resigned who took over ?
Karim Berges, Former President and Founder, Association of Concerned Belizeans: “I believe it was David Vasquez that took over the presidency of ACB along with the board members and a few new members joined in. I have no idea who is running ACB it was a complete surprise that you telling me that the ACB is back up. Well it was pretty much a political watchdog to oversee the political policies of whichever government was in place and discuss the issues, critique what needed to be critiqued and praise what needed to be praised. The ACB would attack the policy and not make allegations as such, it would be things that would be pretty much in black and white and if there were some show or form of corruption then the ACB would bring it to light but in a legal manner and not go about making accusations. I don’t know how they’re doing it but certainly not make accusations without facts , that wouldn’t be the modus operandi for the ACB. My approach for the ACB to be a political watchdog was genuine so if somebody wants to bring it back and operate as such it would be dishonest of me not to encourage it but in the fashion that it’s going about I’m telling you categorically that’s not the way ACB operates.”
According to the last President of the ACB, David Vasquez, the former members will be issuing a joint release later this week.
