Damaris Garcia is a four-year-old child who has been battling kidney failure since she was only months old. In on instance she has spent up to twenty days in the hospital. The child’s mother Astrid Lorenzo says she has been met with many hardships while caring for Damaris who is unable to receive surgery here in Belize. The Belize Health Care Partners has stepped in and has referred the mother to the Los Alamos Hospital in Guatemala City where surgery to correct the child’s complications can be done. The mother spoke to Love News about her daughter’s kidney issue and the surgery needed for the child to live a normal life.
Astrid Lorenzo, Mother of Child: “The problem started from when she was six months old but every time we would just go to the normal clinic and they always said it was a little infection. This got worse when she ended up in the hospital for almost twenty one days and then at that time they saw that every time she goes to the clinic and that is because of the problem that she had. So we are dealing with this problem for almost three years. It got worse this year because she ended up in the hospital. As we see that we start to have problems because sometimes the doctor doesn’t want to attend to her because of COVID because the symptoms that she has – it’s not the cough it’s only the fever every time she goes she goes with a high fever. They ended up saying that they would give her an ultrasound and this one was an internal ultrasound and that is how they said that the problem that she had three years ago and the medication – because they had said that the medications to control the problem that she had made it worse because now they’re saying that the left kidney is the one that is starting to get a little damaged. If she continues with that she could end up losing the kidney so they said they would do surgery on her so that this problem can be done.”
The mother has been raising funds over the past weeks by selling bar-b-que, to cover the cost of Damaris’ upcoming surgery in Guatemala City and is asking for public support.
Astrid Lorenzo, Mother of Child: “Damaris is going through many things for about two years now and they ended up telling us that they will have surgery this month, that it will be done in Guatemala City so it’s for that reason we are raising funds by making barbecue to sell so that we could get some money so that we could pay for the surgery. The surgery that she will have is about the reflux that her left kidney is the one that they will have the surgery on because she’s having a mild dilation in the left kidney. For that reason every time when she gets to the hospital for that mild dilation she has she gets infection every time. So they ended up telling us that the collateral that doesn’t collect the urine correctly so that starts to affect her kidney and the doctor explained to us that if she continues like that she will end up losing one of the kidneys so that’s the reason that she needs the surgery.”
